Tutoring with Ryan
Welcome! My name is Ryan, and I was an international teacher from 2017-2022, most recently teaching 9th grade math and 12th grade neuroscience at King's Academy, Jordan. Before that, I lived and taught English as a second langauge (ESL) in a small South Korean town called Cheongdo. I moved to New York City in the fall of 2022 to start a doctoral program in school and clinical child psychology at the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology. As part of my training, I have done two externship experiences so far. Last year, I worked in the Union City Public School district in New Jersey, and this year I currently work at NYU Langone in their neuropsycological learning services track. My research interests in my program involve ADHD and effective interventions in school settings.
My pedagogical philosophy is to form relationships first, and then to instruct. I believe all students are capable of success, and most of the time, the challenges they are facing are not with the content, but rather with executive skills including organization, time management, and planning. Having taught through COVID, I am well aware of the challenges students faced during online learning, and I work with students to design learning plans that work for them. If something doesn't work after an honest attempt, we try something new. Learning is a process, and sometimes part of that process means going back to the drawing board.
I was born and raised in San Diego, CA and I received my bachelor's degree in neuroscience from Brown University in 2015. I have been working in education for the past nine years, first at Green Ivy Educational Consulting in Los Altos, CA before becoming a full time, international teacher. I am certified to teach grades 7-12 mathematics in Washington DC. I love traveling (I've been to over 25 countries so far), hiking, exploring restaurants, and catching the latest Marvel movie!
I currently work with multiple students in public and private schools in New York City. I look forward to working with your family!
